Reminder: November meeting moved

If you were intending to make a presentation to the Commission this month, note the different date from our usual schedule.

Per Sandi Dingle:

This is a reminder that the Metropolitan Parks and Open Space Commission Meeting, regularly scheduled for Tuesday, November 6, has been rescheduled to Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 4pm due to Election Day.
An agenda and related materials will be sent out one week prior.

Long Lake boat launch reconstruction

The boat launch at Long Lake will be closed for reconstruction beginning October 15, 2012. The launch will be reopened by mid-November.

October 2012 Meeting

This month had a very short meeting. One notable item was that a new chair was sworn in, filling the spot vacated by Charles Haas earlier this year. The selection was Dean Johnston, who was previously mayor of Lake Elmo. Our other item of business was to approve the master plan for the Intercity Regional Trail in the Minneapolis/Bloomington/Richfield area.

Sucker Lake road construction

The road in the Sucker Lake unit of Vadnais-Snail RP will be closed and under construction from County Road F north to the picnic area (near Highway 96) beginning October 1, 2012. The picnic area will remain open and the trail will reopen by November 30.

September 2012 Meeting

Once again, we spent a fair bit of time discussing proposed rule changes for acquisition grants. Really I don't think members of the commission actually disagree much on what these should be, but since the majority of the commission is relatively new at this we've had to spend a lot of time learning about past procedures and interactions with the legislature years ago, and figuring out what is politically feasible - something we don't normally spend a lot of time dealing with as a generally non-political body.

Sucker Lake trail construction

Sucker Lake Road and trail between County Rd F and Vadnais Blvd will be closed starting today and lasting through Spring 2013, for the project mentioned in March. The narrow, badly potholed road between East and West Vadnais Lakes will be redone as a biking and walking trail only, with limestone fishing spots along the way to provide better access to the water (where no surface use is allowed due to its use by the St. Paul Water Utility) and improved parking and access facilities at either end.
